    After more than 18 years of civil war in the North and East Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government finally agreed to a ceasefire in Feb 2002. Peace in Sri Lanka did not last long. Fighting erupted again at the end of 2005 and the violence still continues.

    JRS Sri Lanka operates in the North and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka, taking care of the people displaced by the current conflict. JRS provides support to the displaced people in terms of education, skills acquisition, income generating projects, housing and emergency relief.

    Many schools and educational institutions were destroyed during the war. JRS Sri Lanka will be establishing an English Academy in Mannar in late 2007 and is looking for volunteers help establish programmes and curriculum for the teaching of English to children and adults. Singhalese and Tamil are the common language spoken by the people in North Sri Lanka.

    Formation training will be conducted prior to the mission.

    Volunteer Requirements:
    Minimum duration of the required mission is 4 months. The length of stay is up to the volunteer to decide.

    Volunteers should preferably be Catholic. Can communicate effectively in English. You must be above 21 years of age. Preference will be given to volunteers with training development and teaching background and/or experience. You must be able to work independently after the training period. An interpreter will be assigned to the volunteer.

    Volunteers will be required to attend 2 – 3 briefing and formation sessions prior to the trip.

    Cost:Cost of airfare and accommodation will be borne by JRS Singapore and JRS Sri Lanka. Accommodation will be basic.

    Independent Census official for Internally Displaced Sri Lankans
    Batticaloa, Jaffna, Mannar, Tricomalee in Sri Lanka
    Between 3 – 6 months

    One important task of JRS Sri Lanka is the regular conducting of census to determine the number of people being displayed, the number of casualties caused by the conflict and to facilitate repatriation. To do this task, independent census officials are needed. Interpreters and training will be provided by JRS Sri Lanka.

    Formation training will be conducted prior to the mission.
